Have fun piecing together a lovely picture of six splendid
horses pulling a traditional wooden wagon at the Oktobrfest
folk festival. The wagon belongs to the Paulaner
brewery, one of the 6 Munich breweries that partcipate in the
Oktoberfest.
The Oktoberfest has been celebrated in Munich since
1810. Over the years its nature has evolved, keeping a
great number of traditions whilst in some aspects morphing
into an interesting mixture of old and new.
To take things back to their roots, on the occasion of the
200th jubilee in 2010 a so-called historical Oktoberfest was
organised at the South End of the Theresienwiese in Munich
where the festival is traditionally held. It opened one day
before beginning of the real Oktoberfest, with a barrel
tapping by the chief burgomaster. On the five-hectare area,
historical carnival rides, festival tents and other historical
attractions were set up. Harking back to the original
Oktoberfests, horse racing was held. There was also an
animal tent containing a petting zoo amongst other
things.
Six Munich breweries made available exclusively here a
specially brewed dark beer which was produced according to a
historical recipe from the beginning of the 19th
century. Appropriately, the beer mugs in the festival
tents sported the label “Munich beer“ rather than the brand
logo of a single brewery. In contrast to the rest of the
Oktoberfest, the historical meadow closed at 8.00 PM. Instead
of the expected 300,000 guests which were expected, far more
than half a million visitors came to enjoy this celebration.
During the coming years this traditional Oktoberfest will
continue to exist as a permanent festival under the name "Oide
Wiesn", although in a more diminished form. For example the
horse racecourse will not be present in the future. The
historical festival tent has increased to hold another 2,000
people and the old-style carnival rides have been kept.
